Underpainting

Underpainting: " I'm really enjoying working on a square canvas again...this one measures 24x24 and I really like this composition. In the past year most of my work has focussed quite close on the subject, but this time I moved away from it a bit and liked what I saw. I've only included flowers a few times, though I was known as the 'flower & fabric specialisit' in art school. It's quite interesting to see the techniques that I still utilize from so many years ago...using my brush and paint to draw on my canvas is one of them. Traditionally, creating a full two-tone underpainting (almost like a black & white photo) was utilized underneath layers of transparent coloured glazes. Sometimes I like the initial drawing so much that I don't want to disturb it, though I know it is incomplete. This stage of the painting flows so beautifully, being a quick and loose sketch. It's the point where I can make any changes by rubbing out colour with a wet rag or adding thicker paint. Generally I prefer to use a navy or purple that I mix but on occasion I've used up paint that was left on my palette from a previous painting. And now I think this piece calls for red. Not sure why, but I just feel like something rich & warm. By the way, I've been having trouble leaving comments on people's blogs, not that I haven't been visiting...has anyone else experienced the same problem?
